Puppy Register
Welcome to the West of England Labrador Retriever Club’s Puppy Register.
We believe that the Labrador is one of the finest dogs you can have for a family friend or working companion.
When choosing a Labrador puppy, one of the first things to consider is that he or she is going to be in your life for, hopefully, 12 or more years. Good temperament and good health are paramount. For this reason it is important to buy from a breeder who has a reputation for producing healthy, good natured dogs.
The Labrador is one of the most popular breeds in the world. They have been carefully bred for many generations to be friendly, easy to train, healthy and athletic. They are loyal, gentle, active and kind. There is good reason why they are chosen for many roles beside being a loving pet. Many owners enjoy competing with their Labradors at shows, in obedience, agility and trials but Labradors are extremely versatile. They can be trained as Gundogs, Guide Dogs, Search and Rescue Dogs, PAT Dogs, Hearing & Assistance Dogs and Dogs for the Disabled.
When looking for a puppy, it is very much a case of “buyer beware” - knowing what to look for and what questions to ask. If you want a Labrador let us help you find that special companion you can be proud of. Our members have the knowledge, skills and experience to help and support you during the lifetime of the puppy. However, the Club cannot accept responsibility for puppies or the suitability of new dog owners.
Please remember that pure bred Labradors come in only three colours – black, yellow and chocolate. Any other colour is not permitted in the Kennel Club breed standard (ie. silver, charcoal & champagne) and there are likely to be health and temperament issues as well.
The West of England Labrador Retriever Club is here to help potential puppy buyers find a healthy, well-bred and socialised puppy and give new owners advice where possible. Only puppies with both parents Hip and elbow scored, a current KC BVA Eye test certificate and DNA certificates are allowed on the Puppy Register
Our Puppy Register is kept by Mrs Claire Mills
If you are a member and want to add a litter to the register -
The Royal Kennel Club have published a Breed Health Standard for Labrador Retrievers and the Club recommends that you do all the tests on both parents before breeding, .Hip Score, Elbow score and an Annual Eye certificate are essential. It is important to do DNA tests for PRA prcd, HNPK, MCD, EIC, CNM, SD2 and SGCD and one parent MUST be clear for each test to avoid the possibility of producing an affected puppy.
Please complete the on line form and upload certificates for health tests. The information will be checked and details of the litter and contact information will be posted here on the Club website. No address will be published - only the county.
As the breeder it is your responsibility to vet the new owners and suitability of the home.
Looking for a Labrador Puppy ?
If you want a Labrador puppy then you should follow this advice before buying a puppy.
-
Make sure that you see the puppies with their mother.
-
If you find a breeder with either a litter of puppies or who has one planned, make sure that both parents of the puppies have been hip scored and have a current clear eye certificate.
-
An answer from the breeders- both parents have been checked over by a vet” is not acceptable.
-
If the health information sounds satisfactory for both parents you should arrange to meet the breeder and see the mother and puppies . This meeting will give you the chance to see the type and temperament of the dogs, that the litter has been reared well and are thriving and it also lets any decent breeder check you out in return! You should also ask to see the health certificates.
-
Puppies should be Microchipped before they leave the breeder - this is now the law.
-
You should be given a 'Puppy pack' containing information on feeding, training, a pedigree, Kennel Club Registration certificate, worming certificate, copies of health test certificates for both parents, advice on exercise, a contract of sale and 4 weeks free health insurance
